Village Place is run by two sisters, Marjan Philhour and Sarah Wright, the latter is the artist behind BlueStone Pottery.
Philhour, who is a local mom of three and involved in a number of community organizations, including as Parent Teacher Group President of St. Thomas the Apostle School in the neighborhood, has always thought that our merchant corridor was missing a cute gift shop where she can buy birthday gifts for kids parties that seem to be happening every weekend.
When the former tenant Better; for Living decided to switch to online retailing and move their art production base to Oakland, Philhour saw the opportunity to make her longtime dream of owning her own shop in this neighborhood come true.
“The space was already gorgeous because of the talented couple of Better; for Living had set it up so nicely, it was really turn key,” said Philhour.
Sarah Wright is already an accomplished ceramicist whose resume includes working at Heath Ceramics and creating a whole collection for Bodega restaurant in North Beach. Joining her sister once she had the shop was a future plan, but things really sped up once the space became available and the plan became a reality.
“I’ve been firing non-stop for these mugs and getting my branding established with a new logo and refreshed social media accounts,” Wright mentions. “It is really great to have my own space where I can show my collection and really exciting that I can start holding ceramic classes in this beautiful space.”
The aesthetic of the shop is airy, industrial chic with gold accent color and natural wood. There is a backyard that’s currently undergoing a facelift. The space will be available for parties and photo shoots in the coming weeks.
